Emmy will always be his No. 1 Assistant… but I like how ‘assistant’ is a title passed around Layton’s companions. Emmy passed it on to Luke, but after she’s gone, he still insists on being Layton’s apprentice. After Luke leaves for America, you assume Luke would ask Flora to be Layton’s assistant. Then maybe Flora passed it on to Alfendi, who is 8 years older than Kat, so he would’ve been 19 at the time LMJ ep 10 takes place. And so on… Maybe Kat would’ve taken over if Layton hadn’t left.

Layton’s assistants aren’t only there to do research and puzzles. Maybe they protect Layton, or bring their unique talents to the table (martial arts, animal connections, mechanics etc), or provide him with comfort. It doesn’t matter how old they are, or strong, or how useless they might appear. 

They love the professor, and that’s enough.
